Furniture must meet a specific set of standards and regulations to demonstrate its safety and be launched on the market. Using different test methods, Element's fire testing experts perform furniture flammability testing on a variety of products, including:
- bedding systems used in public buildings, such as health care facilities, old age convalescent board and care homes, college dormitories, residence halls, and hotels
- mattresses and mattress pads for use in residential and institutional buildings, including high-risk facilities such as prisons and penal institutions, nursing homes, and health care facilities
- seating furniture used in public occupancies such as nursing care homes, jails, public auditoriums and stadiums, hotels, and offices
- upholstered chairs
- decking materials
- filling and padding components
Our laboratories are equipped to perform flammability testing on full furniture, mock-ups, and individual components. We investigate reaction to fire properties such as ease of ignition, flame spread, the evolution of smoke and toxic gases, and the burning material's heat release rate. We test for resistance to open flame ignition sources and smoldering ignition sources such as cigarettes.
Our experts have an in-depth knowledge of fire safety regulations. They can conduct testing against CAL TB 117, NFPA 260, and other major national and international standards to give you confidence that your furniture is fit for purpose and safe to use.
